Required Documentation by Start Date of Program

  • CDL Class A Learner’s Permit: To obtain a CDL Class A Learner’s Permit, one must pass three written exams at the DMV: General Knowledge, Air Brakes, and Combination Vehicles.
    • To study, please reference the NC State CDL Manual: . The General Knowledge exam is comprised of questions sourced from sections 1 through 3, Air Brakes is sourced from section 5, and Combination Vehicles is sourced from section 6.
    • Additionally, please use the following application to practice these exams before arriving at the DMV. (Most students find this application to be the most helpful.)
    • To assist with testing for these exams, the Roxboro DMV ( ) will accommodate our students as “walk-ins,” meaning one does not have to make an appointment or wait in line. However, the Roxboro DMV’s only condition for our students is that they arrive no later than 8 a.m. Upon arrival, please skip the line and inform the front desk worker that you are a student with the college. You do not have to set an appointment or wait in line.
  • DOT Approved Physical (Medical Card): DOT Approved Physicals may be performed at the FastMed in Roxboro (910 N Madison Blvd C, Roxboro, NC 27573) or at any urgent care or clinic that is authorized to do so. If one already has a medical card, it must be valid for the full duration of the training.
  • DOT Approved Drug Screening (FMCSA Regulation): DOT Approved Drug Screenings may be performed at the FastMed in Roxboro (910 N Madison Blvd C, Roxboro, NC 27573) or at any urgent care or clinic that is authorized to do so. The specimen result certificate must read “DOT-FMCSA” under the regulation type to be accepted.

Notably, students may register for an upcoming program before obtaining these documents. However, students are expected to have all three documents by the program’s start date.

To all upcoming students, please do not wait until the Friday before orientation to schedule one’s first attempt at testing for the learner’s permit. The vast majority of students fail on the first attempt, so it is highly encouraged that all upcoming students allocate enough time for three to four retakes if required.
